An adze/ hoe is similar to an axe, except the blade is sideways.
When an adze is used on a tree, the tree is completely destroyed. This is a surprise, since the adze is similar to an axe, and an axe would cut down the tree. It could be that either Maxwell is very enthuastic with the adze, or he thinks it's a weapon. An adze can be used for digging.
